<image:caption>Only seven people inhabit the island of Tussøy in Arctic Norway. For two years I photographed the island and it resulted in the book Tussøy, published by Kehrer Verlag (2017). When you live this close to nature, you have to adapt. The margins are narrow, and nature can be very dangerous if you don’t listen to it and respect it. You have to know all the reefs in the sea and you have to read the signs of the weather. If you think you can conquer nature, it will become your enemy. This humility and knowledge can take years to learn and sometimes generations. What will happen to us if we lose this knowledge?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Tussøy</image:title>
<image:caption>The book Tussøy was published by Kehrer Verlag in 2017. Only seven people inhabit the island of Tussøy in Arctic Norway. There have lived people on the island since early Iron Age, and the number of people peaked around 1950 with sixty inhabitants. In the following decades, most of the rural areas along the coast experienced a large depopulation. People left to get closer to schools, universities, jobs and roads. But not everyone left. What made some people leave and others stay? The interaction between nature and human being has been the background for the project. I believe the nature around you is important for who you become. When you live this close to nature, you have to adapt. The margins are narrow, and nature can be very dangerous if you don’t listen to it and respect it. <image:caption>During the busiest period the Svea Coal Mine had three hundred workers. Now it has been decided that the mine will be shut down for good, and less than 30 workers are there to maintain the construction. Cultural heritage from before 1946 is automatically protected, but everything else will be removed: The airport, the harbour, the power station, buildings, electric installations and polluted soil. How much that will be removed is under progress. But will it be possible to restore nature after hundred years of mining?</image:caption>

<image:caption>For two years I made travels along the Barents region together with journalist Arne Egil Tønset, and the journeys resulted in a book called Barents Portraits – A Journey Across Borders. The Barents region consists of the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and North-West Russia, and is a political region that was created after the cold war.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In April 1986 reactor 4 in Chernobyl exploded. The nuclear plant was situated in Ukraine, but as much as 80 per cent of the poisonous fallout fell down over the neighbouring country Belarus. I visited the area twenty years after the disaster and met the people who still live close to the so-called Black Zone. This story was awarded First Prize in the category ”Best Foreign Documentary” in the Norwegian “Picture of the Year Award” 2006/2007.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Eternit</image:title>
<image:caption>Eternit boards was the perfect building material. Cement mixed with asbestos was supposed to be maintenance free and became very popular in the fifties and sixties, particularly along the coast where the weather can be rough. In the seventies it was discovered that the asbestos was highly dangerous when handled. In Norway it was forbidden to produce Eternit from 1978. It is not dangerous when the boards stay untouched, and still there are Eternit board houses spread all around the country. The material that once was the future, is now a memory of a bygone era.</image:caption>
